Zach Wilson was drafted by the New York Jets with great expectations for the future. The young QB was drafted second overall during the 2021 NFL draft with a keen eye toward the future.
The Jets believed that Wilson will be the next big thing in the NFL. However, he massively failed to provide any significant impact on the team. Therefore, the Jets had to look at other options and they signed the legendary QB Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.
Joe Douglas, the Jets GM, believes he could have handled things a bit differently with respect to the Wilson incident. The biggest concern that Douglas has is the way young Wilson was thrust into massive expectations.
“I go back and I look at a lot of things and things that can be done differently, things that were in our control, out of our control,” GM Joe Douglas said in an appearance on #PFTPM. “And every situation’s different. I feel like in today’s NFL, when you take a quarterback in the first round, and you take a quarterback high, time’s against you. And you need to see what you have so you can make a decision in that four-year window, three-year window.”
Now, Joe Douglas looks towards the future. He believes Zach Wilson will learn a lot under Aaron Rodgers as the veteran QB has gained decades of experience playing in the NFL.
Joe Douglas believes Zach Wilson has great potential
The Jets management still hasn’t lost hope in Zach Wilson and believes he will prove to be a great QB in the future. Joe Douglas is looking forward to Wilson’s development under the leadership of Rodgers and believes he has a high ceiling for growth.
Zach has also been working hard since the arrival of Rodgers and has changed his work ethic drastically to compete with one of the best QBs of all time. “Zach has an unbelievable ceiling, and Zach is wired the right way in terms of his love of the game, his work ethic, his attention to detail,” Joe Douglas stated. “So, this is a great opportunity for him to shadow one of the best passers of all time in Aaron Rodgers.”
The Jets GM wants Wilson to shadow the veteran QB and learn every little detail about him. Zach Wilson can turn around his fortunes if he learns for a couple of more years under Rodgers and can lead the Jets for the future.
