With all the talk around the MVP award nominees, Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco chose to direct his attention toward the ‘Comeback Player of the Year.’ And he already has the most deserving candidate shortlisted!
Despite having a reviving season of his own, Flacco advocates for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin as the most deserving to win the award, in his recent appearance on Zach Gelb Show on CBS Sports, last Friday.
He put forward Hamlin’s name claiming:
I just think mentally to get yourself back to the point where you feel comfortable doing that kind of thing, obviously the physical part doesn't need any explanation, but the mental part, especially at his position, is pretty cool.Joe Flacco said
Last season, the Bills safety suffered a cardiac arrest in the middle of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, after which he had to be resuscitated and immediately taken to the hospital. He was hospitalized for nine days after the incident, but fortunately, he was out of danger.
Upon his return, he played three games this season, two of which were playoff games including the divisional-round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs which got the Bills eliminated this season.
Hamlin has already won the Pro Football Writers of America’s version award for his return in the 2023 season. He’s also up for the Associated Press award against the Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Flacco.
For the Comeback Player of the Year award, Hamlin is the favorite with -400 odds while Flacco is at +320 odds to win.
Joe Flacco unsure about his candidacy for the Comeback Player of the Year award
Though Flacco seemed confident in Hamlin’s odds of winning the award, he expressed uncertainty over his own candidacy for the award.
Joe Flacco told CBS Sports:
I'm just coming back from being old and not being on a team for a couple months.Joe Flacco said
Flacco, who parted ways from the New York Jets after the 2022 season, was not a part of any NFL roster this season. He was finally recruited by the Browns back in December, as he led them into the playoffs.
He threw for 1,616 yards along with 13 touchdowns in the Browns’ final six games before their elimination due to the 41-14 loss against the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.
