The Washington Commanders led by their starting quarterback Sam Howell took on the Baltimore Ravens in a preseason matchup on Sunday. In a close and entertaining game, the Commanders defeated the Ravens 29-28 on the back of a clutch kick from Joey Slye and handed the Baltimore-based franchise their first preseason loss in the last 8 years.

During the final seconds of the game, the Commanders’ kicker Joey Slye nailed a 49-yard field goal attempt to give a one-point lead to the Washington-based football team. In the end, the Ravens suffered a 29-28 loss in the regulation period.

The Ravens hadn’t lost a preseason game in eight years before Monday. After Slye converted the field goal attempt, he threw an “L” sign pointed toward his own sideline before celebrating with his teammates. Despite this being just a preseason game, the Commanders’ players, executives, and fans celebrated the victory enthusiastically.

The Commanders’ head coach Ron Rivera, however, stayed calm and soaked in the victory with a smile and some claps. Even one of the Commanders’ new owners and the NBA legend Magic Johnson sent out a tweet about how fun the victory was.

“I know it’s only preseason but the Commanders’ victory over the Ravens to end their NFL preseason win streak was a lot of fun for Commanders fans!” wrote Johnson on the social media platform X.

Just a few days ago, the Washington Commanders named Sam Howell as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. The veteran QB Jacoby Brissett will be the backup QB in Washington.

And now, during the Commanders’ second preseason game on Monday, Howell balled out against the Ravens’ defense. Howell completed 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 188 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. Furthermore, he also carried the rock 3 times for 17 yards.

The UNC product was drafted by the Washington-based football team back in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He sat behind Taylor Heinicke during the majority of the 2022 season and is now seemingly ready to take over as the starting signal-caller.

He will now try to lead the team to the playoffs from one of the toughest divisions in the NFL, the NFC East. Howell has a big year ahead of him in 2023 and has all the right tools around him to succeed.
