Field goals in football are important. A lot of important games are decided on last-minute field goals. The New England Patriots won their first Super Bowl with an Adam Vinatieri FG. A FG above 50 yards is great, anything above 60 yards is gold. One such field goal took place during the Washington Commanders-Philadelphia Eagles game. Commanders’ kicker, Joey Slye gave the fans a kick for the ages.
The Commanders have been a tough out for the Eagles in the recent past. They snapped the Eagles’ eight-game unbeaten streak in 2022 and came close to doing so again earlier this season. In their game on Sunday, the Commanders gave their fans a moment to remember. Slye, the Commanders’ kicker, came good on a 61-yard field goal attempt at the end of the first half which gave Washington a seven-point lead.

The Commanders came out of the blocks firing as they took an early eleven-point lead in the first half. However, the Eagles fought back and made it a four-point game late in the second quarter. On a 1st and 15 with one second to go in the first half, Slye converted on a 61-yard FG and was understandably hyped about it. It was the longest field goal in the history of the franchise.
The Commanders came into the game against the Eagles on the back of an ugly loss against the New York Giants. They are 3-4 this season and have been very inconsistent. The Eagles, on the other hand, blew away the dynamic Miami Dolphins team in their week 7 game. They are 6-1 through seven games of the season.
Fans amazed by Joey Slye’s 61-yard field goal
Joey Slye has etched his name in Washington Commanders‘ history. He recorded the franchise’s longest field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. It was a 61-yard bomb at the end of the half that gave Washington a seven-point lead.

Fans were left in awe after the kick as they reacted to it on social media. Slye had already converted a couple of extra points before the record-breaking field goal. Here are some of the reactions to the FG:
Slye went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. He participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ tryout but did not sign with them. His first real chance came with the Carolina Panthers in 2019. After impressing in the preseason, he was named as the Panthers’ kicker for that season. He has been with the Commanders since 2021.
