In the 2022 off-season, the San Francisco 49ers officially picked up the fifth-year option of their former second-overall pick Nick Bosa. He will earn $17.9 million in 2023 and that figure will go way high when he signs his second contract, whether with the Niners or someone else. The 49ers GM John Lynch isn’t worried about losing Bosa to others and is patiently waiting to get a deal done on his contract extension.

During the annual league meetings, the 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed the Bosa situation and gave some insights into when the deal might be done between both parties. As for the timeline, Lynch simply said that it will take a lot of patience and persistence to get it done.

“He’s training. He’s doing what Nick Bosa does, like a madman,” Lynch said, “and we’re going to address his contract at some point. I know that it will take persistence, it will take patience, all the things I said before.”

“He’s a really good player who’s going to get everything that he’s earned and deserves, and I do like our track record of getting [extensions] done,” Lynch said.“They don’t come as quick as you’d like sometimes … And this one, I don’t know where that would be. I don’t think that has to be the case, but we’ll see where it goes.”

Nick Bosa is an elite defensive player and the San Francisco 49ers wouldn’t want to wait till next off-season for a contract extension. Maybe in a few months down the road, both parties might be able to reach a middle ground.

Defensive end Nick Bosa is currently one of the best defenders in the league. He was drafted by the 49ers as the second-overall pick in 2019 and has been absolutely a nightmare matchup for the opposing offensive lineman.

During his four-year stint with the 49ers, Bosa has registered 43 sacks, 1 interception, and 8 forced fumbles despite missing 14 games during his second year due to injuries. Besides, apart from his injury-riddled 2020 season, the 6’4″ defensive end has been selected to Pro Bowls in all other seasons and has been named to the first-team All-Pro squad 1 time.

Furthermore, last season he led the league in sacks (18.5) and was deservingly named the Defensive Player of the Year. Players like Bosa are not easy to find and will certainly will cost a lot of money for the Niners to keep him tied to their franchise.

If the 49ers can’t reach a deal with him before next off-season, Bosa will probably be placed under the franchise tag, but it’s better to sign him to a long-term deal sooner. His new contract will possibly surpass the highest-paid defender Aaron Donald, who is getting paid $31.7 million by the LA Rams.
