When the San Francisco 49ers traded for three first-round picks for Trey Lance in 2021, they were hoping it would pay dividends in the future. General Manager John Lynch was part of the bandwagon that brought the young quarterback to the Bay Area. But two years and a handful of snaps later, he is to be offloaded to the Dallas Cowboys.

The 23-year-old’s future with the 49ers was thrown into contention when they chose Sam Darnold as their backup quarterback. In the wake of Lance’s imminent exit, Lynch accepted that sometimes things don’t turn out the way they envision them.

“Really hard day. Such a wonderful young man,” Lynch told CBS radio host Greg Papa, as per the 49ers webzone, before the friendly between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “We took a shot, and it didn’t work out. We take accountability for it.”

Since it was clear Lance would merely be a third choice, it seems several teams were keeping an eye on him. The Cowboys just played their hands quickly.

“Dallas stepped up and really wanted him,” John Lynch added. “I think it’s going to be a great landing spot.” He wished the outgoing player the best of luck. “We wish Trey all the best in Dallas. We’ll always care about that young man.”

It was unanimous that Brock Purdy would be the starting quarterback because of how well he performed last year. Despite being the last player in the 2022 draft, he silenced the critics by completing 66.5 percent of his passes for 1,943 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Trey Lance still had two years remaining on his rookie contract. Trading him only saved the 49ers $2.4 million in cap space for the 2023 season.

Does Trey Lance fit into the Dallas Cowboys system?

The ideal scenario for Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones would be for Dak Prescott to win the Super Bowl after almost three decades and then become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. But there’s still a big if. As things stand, Trey Lance will sit in the dugout in 2024, learn from the Pro Bowler, and then make his way up to the top.

However, there’s still Cooper Rush in the mix. The backup to Prescott played really well last year after he hurt his hand and went off injured early in the season. He played nine games, threw for 1051 yards, and scored five touchdowns.

On paper, Lance’s move may seem out of the ordinary, but it does signal the bell for Dak Prescott. Jerry Jones may have faith and see the 30-year-old as a future Hall of Famer, but he too will run out of patience eventually. It’s in the realm of possibility.
