“We’re doing this the right way”: John Spytek on the Bucs draft success

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did not have the best season this year, the team endured a lot of hardships in a year where the main priority was to win another title and establish themselves as a dynasty. However, unforeseen events with Antonio Brown and injuries to the starters led to the team falling to the Los Angeles Rams.

The team, however, did have a remarkable Superbowl run in the previous year, which was not only Tom Brady’s first year on a different team but also the year in which COVID plagued the league and led to the cancellation of the pre-season games.

Tom Brady does deserve his share of credit for the success of the team due to the leadership role that he carries, and so does HC Bruce Arians who let Tom and his defensive coordinators draw up plays that any orthodox HC in the league would oppose. The using heroes of that year’s Superbowl run are the scouting team of the Tampa Bay Bucs.

“We accomplished the ultimate goal”: John Spytek

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

John Spytek, the Bucs Vice President of Personnel was responsible for drafting the likes of Mike Edwards, Scotty Miller, Jamel Dean, and Anthony Nelson. These players had a profound impact on the team and made crucial plays that led to the Buccaneers winning multiple games. All of these players belonged to the 2019 draft class.

So much talent within a single draft is unheard of, in addition to that, all of them contributed so much to the overall success team. Ahead of the 2022 draft, John Spytek was asked what the team’s strategy was in order to achieve that same level of success from this year’s draft class as well, his strategy is simple, “There’s some things we can take here and there, we like this, we did this, and we were right on this, you kind of take a moment and breathe, and study our own roster. We’re doing this the right way as we kinda accomplished the ultimate goal with guys on their rookie contracts.”

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! This strategy has worked for the Bucs and we can assume that Tom Brady could have some input this year as well into the draft picks of the team. We have to wait and watch as to how the team’s draft performance this year is.
