Johnny Manziel has made a resurgence. Not on the football field but he has become an instant hit on football podcasts, especially after the release of his Netflix documentary. He recently went on Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive end Maxx Crosby‘s The Rush podcast. While conversing on an array o topics, one of them was Manziel’s time playing for the Cleveland Browns.

He was addressing a point in his career when he did not have confidence in himself, I was last on the depth chart. I had no confidence, I didn’t have confidence in the ability to throw the football the way I needed to, and in practice, for me the best part of my game was being elusive and making people miss and running. You can’t do that in practice.”

Johnny Manziel was known for his unorthodox style of play. He never stuck to the game plan, the reason he gained notoriety in college was because he had the knack to just take off and improvise on plays. His run game stunned defensive backs and that was his unique selling point. However, while practicing in an NFL setting, it is not always possible for Manziel to just break off and run because defensive backs would not be happy about it. Such plays put them at a higher risk of injury.

Johnny Manziel called defensive players in the NFL soft

Manziel took a jibe at defensive players as he called them “You as a defensive end crybaby a** f***ing defensive players.” If defensive ends utilized their energy in guarding Johnny Manziel during practice, most of them would end up with broken ankles or other injuries. It is hard to keep up to the man when it comes to speed and mobility.

Manziel never made it big in the NFL. He ended up being a bust as the hype he had surrounding him entering the league did not match his performance. In 14 games, he rushed for 260 yards, threw for under 2,000 yards, had 7 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. His career was overshadowed by substance abuse and eventually the pressure got to him.

Manziel has since gotten help and is now leading a much better life. It is good to see that he is happy now. Recently, Manziel took a stand for Reggie Bush, who had his Heisman Trophy taken away after a four-year NCAA investigation came to the conclusion that the running back and his family accepted cash, travel expenses, and a residence in San Diego along with $10,000. Manziel has vowed to boycott the trophy ceremony of the Heisman until Bush’ award is reinstated.
