The Indianapolis Colts coaching staff was considering placing their running back Jonathan Taylor on the non-football injury list. According to Mike Chappell of Fox 59/CBS 4, Taylor reportedly suffered a back injury during a personal workout session in Arizona. Seeing the news, Taylor himself revealed that the rumors were false.
It’s the end of July, and most of the franchises have begun their preseason training camps. This is the time of year for coaches to assess their players and map out a spreadsheet on how to create the best team. The players are thoroughly scrutinized during the process. Any injury or fitness issues are monitored in order to help the player in question recover quickly. So when the Colts staff heard about Taylor’s back issues, they immediately put him on the injury list.
The 24-year-old had been recovering from a knock to the ankle, which resulted in his worst season yet. He even had to go through surgery in January. The rehab was going smoothly until he showed up at the Colts training camp with a troubled back, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder. However, the Wisconsin speedster himself took to Twitter to clarify the matter.
“1.) Never had a back pain. 2.) Never reported back pain,” he wrote on Twitter. “Not sure who the ‘sources’ are, but find new ones.”
Jonathan Taylor requested a trade from the Indianapolis Colts
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Jonathan Taylor’s status with the Colts is in doubt after he requested a trade. He even met with team owner Jim Irsay to discuss the matter. However, Irsay announced on Saturday that they would not be trading Taylor this year, The Athletics’ Jim Boyd reported.
Now the suspected false news of him being unfit to play came into public knowledge. Taylor is well aware that if the Colts decide to put him on the NFI list, it will put a dent in his salary. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract. If his injury is serious, he may have to sit out the entire 2023 season, which for Taylor is not a viable scenario.
Moreover, the reason Irsay decided to refuse the trade possibility is that they don’t have a quality running back cover for the moment. They did pick up Evan Hull as a fifth-round pick. The pressure of being the starter in the first session would be too much for him. So they don’t really have a choice but to keep Jonathan Taylor on the team. But after the latest tweet, it seems the relationship may turn sour even more.
