On Thursday, the NFL owners officially approved the sale of the Washington Commanders by Daniel Snyder. The controversial former owner sold his franchise to a group led by the American billionaire Josh Harris for a record price of $6.05 billion. And now, just a day after the sale became official, the new owner takes a shot at his NFC East division rivals Dallas Cowboys.
“It’s hard to imagine, but I’ve seen the numbers. The Commanders were once the No. 1 franchise in the NFL back when they were the Redskins and even after that. Not the Dallas Cowboys,” said Harris at the press conference after the sale was unanimously approved by the owners.
Harris also said that he would bring back the Washington-based franchise to its glory days when it used to dominate the NFL. As division rivals, the Cowboys and the Commanders share an intense rivalry. However, in the last few years, the Commanders weren’t that good of a team under the leadership of the previous owner, Daniel Snyder.
Fans of the Commanders celebrated Snyder selling the team. The new owner, Josh Harris, isn’t exactly new to the sports business. He already owns big sports franchises, including the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers have been competing for the championship the last few years and have been a very functional team as opposed to the Dan Snyder-owned Commanders.
And now, under the new leadership, the Commanders are looking to bring back the old fans that left the franchise during Snyder’s disaster era in Washington. The franchise is expected to have a makeover under the new regime and is expected to change the team’s name in the future.

What does the new ownership means for Commanders HC Ron Rivera?
The long-term head coach Ron Rivera has been the leader of the Washington Commanders since 2020. Under his leadership, the Commanders have a win-loss-tie record of 22-27-1.
Rivera joined the Commanders with huge expectations after his somewhat successful stint with the Carolina Panthers. He signed a 5-year contract with the team in 2020 and still 2 years left in his deal.
Rivera and the Commanders took advantage of a weak NFC East in 2020 and won the division title with an ugly record of 7-9. But He hasn’t won anything in Washington since that season.
Now this new regime could put some pressure on the veteran head coach. If Rivera fails to deliver in the upcoming season, the new owners could start looking in the other direction for head coaching positions. Maybe someone new inside the camp, like the offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, could get a promotion to become the new head coach.
