Just a few weeks ago, the former Denver Broncos player Melvin Gordon said it sucks to be a running back in the NFL. It might be true as Josh Jacobs, the league’s rushing yards leader in the 2022 season, is struggling to get a long-term deal done with the Las Vegas Raiders. Amidst the contract negotiations, Jacobs has now made a bold decision on his part.

According to a report from Paloma Villicana of Fox5 News in Las Vegas, the Raiders’ All-Pro running back Jacobs will not attend the Las Vegas-based football team’s training camp without signing a new contract. This is an important development in the contract negotiations between the Raiders and Jacobs that is going on for several months.

After failing to sign Josh Jacobs to a long-term deal in the early stages of the 2023 off-season, the Raiders placed their former first-round pick under the franchise tag back in March. However, Jacobs hasn’t signed the tag yet. Instead, the talented running back is still hoping to get a long-term deal done in the off-season itself.

It should be noted that the deadline for the franchise-tagged players to sign a long-term deal is just a couple of days away. The franchise-tagged players should sign a long-term deal within 4 p.m. ET on July 17. After that, players wouldn’t be able to sign a multi-year deal until the end of the 2023 regular season in January.

If Jacobs couldn’t reach a middle ground on a multi-year contract extension, he could either play under the franchise tag that is worth approximately $10 million or he could sit out the entire 2023 season.

As the former Broncos RB Melvin Gordon mentioned, the running back position might literally be the worst position to play in the NFL right now. It is evident in the cases of the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs, the New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley, and the former Minnesota Vikings rusher Dalvin Cook.

Jacobs, who was a Pro Bowler, an All-Pro, and the rushing yards leader in the 2022 season, could only get a franchise tag in return from the Raiders franchise. Barkley, who was arguably the best offensive player in the Giants unit, also faces a similar issue. He also hasn’t signed his franchise tag yet. Barkley is, however, expected to sign a multi-year deal before the deadline on June 17.

Besides, the Vikings surprisingly released their Pro Bowl rusher Dalvin Cook, who registered 4 straight Pro Bowl seasons in the last 4 years. He is now a free agent looking for a new home in 2023.
