Is the running back spot one of the underappreciated positions on a football team? Many do believe so. But they are an integral part of a squad, and if they are the best of the best in the game and face a harsh time acquiring a worthy contract, then a situation similar to Josh Jacobs will arise. The Las Vegas Raiders RB was looking for an extension. But they failed to reach an agreement, and now Jacobs is refusing to show up for training camp.

The 25-year-old Josh Jacobs has had an amazing career so far in the NFL, surpassing the 1,000-yard rushing mark in each of his first two seasons with the Vegas team. But last year, Jacobs was brawling as he rushed for 1,653 yards and 12 touchdowns. Moreover, he led the league with 2,053 yards from scrimmage and 393 touches and made it to his first All-Pro team.

Naturally, Jacobs was looking to earn his due, and the Raiders were willing to keep the Alabama alum for the long term. The deadline to extend Josh Jacob’s contract was 5 p.m. Monday, July 17. Jacobs was hoping to earn something similar to 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey’s $16.016 million per year. He currently earns $2.9 million through his rookie contract, which he signed in 2019. However, several analysts and insiders revealed Jacobs might be given around $10 to $12 million.

Despite all the noise and waves made throughout the NFL for Jacbo’s contract extension, the Raiders failed to give him one, and the deadline passed. Jacobs, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, was reportedly sitting in his car in the Raiders parking lot with teammate Maxx Crosby.

Some have speculated that owner Mark Davies backed off due to the ongoing quarterback fiasco with Jimmy Garoppolo. The former 49er signed with the Raiders, but injury woes have kept him out of the offseason OTAs. If he fails to recover in time, the Raiders will be forced to acquire a new quarterback.

Yesterday’s debacle means the Raiders may imply the franchise tag on Jacobs and force him to play with his rookie contract intact until March 2024. Fearing his precarious position, Jacobs released a statement saying that he would not be showing up for training.

Losing one of the best running backs is a massive setback for the Las Vegas Raiders going into the 2023 NFL season. However, they do still have the output of Davante Adams, who many believe is the best in the business. They also added former Patriots player Jakobi Meyers. So the Raiders do have some cover, but what if Adams gets injured? Then all hell will break loose.
