Josh Reynolds, the wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, has no explanation for the mistakes he made in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. The wide receiver had two costly third quarter-drops that helped the 49ers clinch a Super Bowl berth.
Both mistakes occurred in the second half when the Niners started making a comeback in the game from a 17-point deficit. Firstly, Reynolds failed to hold onto the ball to complete a crucial fourth-and-2 conversion. A few minutes later, the WR made another mistake.
This time he dropped an easier third-and-nine pass. Both drops took place in the third quarter of the game. It was the most decisive quarter for the Niners as they bagged 17 unanswered points. They equaled the score with the Detroit Lions, who failed to score a single point in that quarter. On Monday, while cleaning out the locker room Reynolds addressed the costly drops to the media.
S*** happens, man. I know what kind of player I am. Didn’t want to drop them. S**t happens. I just — do I want those back? Of course, but I can’t and I just got to work this offseason and be prepared for the moment when it comes.Josh Reynolds told reporters
After the first drop by the wide receiver, the Niners QB Brock Purdy led a five play 72-yards drive which ended in a touchdown. After the second drop, Jake Moody scored a ‘go ahead’ field goal. Both drops had a fundamental role in deciding the fortune of the game.
Jared Goff stood with his wide receiver Josh Reynolds
Despite the costly mistakes, Josh Reynolds enjoyed the support of his quarterback Jared Goff. During the post game press conference the QB was asked whether the responsibility lay on the shoulders of his wide receiver. Goff supported Reynolds by claiming that the wide receiver was not the only one who made mistakes.
We had plenty of mistakes out there. I missed throws. I took sacks. He made a mistake and it happens and he's an absolute studJared Goff told reporters on Sunday
Reynolds did have some stud moments in the regular season. He suffered a serious groin injury in week, but he continued to play for the rest of the season and played all 17 regular season games. He was awarded an incentive bonus by the Lions.
Despite losing the NFC championship game, the Lions created history this year by winning their first postseason game in more than three decades. Their journey will be remembered.
