The NFL is a rough business where players are expected to be loyal while the teams themselves are not. Joshua Dobbs, now the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, started for the Arizona Cardinals a little over a week ago and the following week was traded after Kirk Cousins‘ Achilles injury left the Vikings without a solid option at QB.

Joshua Dobbs appeared on the ‘Torchbearers Podcast’ and broke down the final 36 hours of his time as a Cardinal.

I go to the facility on Monday and JG (Jonathan Gannon), the head coach in Arizona, calls me to his office and he says, 'Hey, we're going to start Clayton Tune in Cleveland.'

This time around, Arizona was still second-guessing if Kyler Murray should be allowed to return following his injury last season.

Jonathan Gannon told Dobbs that Clayton Tune would be starting for the Cardinals against the Cleveland Browns as the team wanted to see how the rookie does in that situation.

I was upset with it, but I understood the situation the franchise was in at that moment.

Jonathan Gannon told Joshua Dobbs to his face that he will remain in Arizona for the rest of the season

Here’s where it got real for Dobbs, while October 31st was the trade deadline, the quarterback was told by Jonathan Gannon that he will remain in Arizona but when he went back home and spoke to his agent regarding the same, the very next morning, the opposite of what he was told happened.

Woke up Tuesday morning with a text from my agent saying, you could be traded today because it's the trade deadline.

When I had my meeting with JG in Arizona, he looked at me in the face and he said, 'You're not getting traded, you're not being released.'

Dobbs had a feeling that “this day is about to be nuts,” and indeed it was. He was traded to the Vikings shortly after. The quarterback went on to add,

So the last 36 hours, whatever was told to you, something different has happened.

In a span of 36 hours, Joshua Dobbs was told that he would be starting in Cleveland, then that he would not be starting but he would not be traded or released, and ultimately, he ended up being traded to the Vikings.

This sums up the NFL and the uncertainty involved for athletes. There is no guarantee, no matter how skilled of a player you are that your team will not consider trading you. It’s just a matter of the price being right.

Joshua Dobbs had an amazing debut in Minnesota as he managed to complete 20 of 30 passes for 148 yards and had two touchdowns while rushing for 66 yards and another touchdown. He did all this with Kevin O’ Connell explaining every play to him via the headset because he did not have time to familiarize himself with the playbook.
