The Minnesota Vikings led by their star QB Kirk Cousins took on the defending NFC Champions Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday in a tough road game. During the game, the Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson‘s remarkable effort went in vain as it got ruled a touchback which led to the fans questioning the point of the rule.
During the final seconds of the second quarter, the Vikings were trailing 7-10 and were facing a 2nd and 10 from the Eagles’ 31-yard line. Cousins, who took the snap from the shotgun position, decided to take a deep shot to his most reliable target, Justin Jefferson, and heaved the rock.
Jefferson, who went up and grabbed the ball, broke one tackle but was wrapped up by the Eagles’ defensive back Terrell Edmunds. During the contact, Jefferson lost the ball in the endzone. Initially ruled as down by contact at the 1-yard line, the referees took a closer look and ruled the play as a touchback since the All-Pro receiver dropped the ball in the endzone.
As a result, the Eagles got the possession of the ball and the Vikings lost an opportunity to score during the final few seconds of the first half. Check out the footage attached below of the same.
The turnover proved very costly since the Vikings ended up losing the game by just one possession. If the Vikings had scored instead of turning it over in the first half, it could’ve been a much closer game. But the touchback call denied the Minnesota-based football team a shot at the endzone, which led to fans fuming on social media.
