Sometimes people forget kickers are football players too, and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Justin Tucker is one of the front-row advocates of that idea. So when a skirmish between his team and the Washington Commanders broke out, he did not stay back and enjoy the show. Rather, he whizzed in on the fun.
Preseason training or not, when two rival teams compete against each other on the same field, there’s bound to be some confrontation. Like clockwork, one broke out during their joint training session at Owings Mills yesterday.
It all started with Lamar Jackson‘s pass to wide receiver Tylan Wallace in the right field. Commanders Emmanuel Forbes Jr. quickly stopped the attack. But Wallace did not like the way the cornerback grabbed him from behind and threw an air punch. The whistle blows, and the fight begins.
At first, Justin Tucker was watching it from afar, but he realized that he had to get his hands—or, rather, his feet—dirty. The 33-year-old put on his helmet and headed toward the eye of the storm as other players hurled themselves at each other.
So what’s the reason behind the hostility? “It’s just guys competing,” Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin told USA Today after the practice.
Fights have broken out in several other team camps as well. In New Jersey, the situation has been tense between the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wide receiver Mike Evans stated to USA Today that he hasn’t seen so much fighting in training camps before.
While these recurrent brawls between players are a pain in the neck for the coaching staff, the fans get more pumped up because of them. Players such as Justin Tucker, who usually get very little time on the field, become heroes because of it.

Justin Tucker is one of the best kickers in the NFL

There are very few kickers that can come close to Justin Tucker in consistency. Since becoming a Baltimore Ravens player in 2012, he has quickly established himself as one of the greatest in his position. In his six seasons in the NFL, Tucker has a field goal percentage of 90.5%. Moreover, he holds the record for the longest field goal with 66 yards.
During his stint at M&T Stadium, Tucker has been named an All-Pro five times and has won six Pro Bowl nods. He was part of the 2012–13 Ravens squad that won the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. For his achievements, Justin Tucker was named to the NFL’s 2010 Team of the Decade.
