Kadarius Toney is one of the most highly talented players in the league. The Kansas City Chiefs had high hopes for the former 1st round pick and even considered him as their number 1 wide receiver. However, Toney has disappointed the Chiefs and their fans in a major way following his horrible outing against the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL season opener.
On Thursday, the Chiefs went against the Lions at their home ground with some of their key players missing. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid expected some of their lesser-known players especially Toney to step in and prove themselves. But Kadarius Toney had one of the worst performances of his career.
In the game, Toney caught 1 pass for negative 1 receiving yards. That’s right, he lost a yard in the only reception he had in his game. That wasn’t the only issue as the young pass catcher dropped several passes. Especially, during the third quarter of the game, when the Chiefs were leading by 7 points, Toney dropped a perfect slant pass on a crucial 3rd down which led to a pick-six and helped the Lions erase the 7-point deficit. In the end, the Chiefs lost the game by just 1 point.
Toney put up a disaster class against the Detroit-based football team. Now, that opens up a question, Who will be the number 1 wide receiver for the Chiefs in the 2023 season? The Chiefs can’t certainly defend their Super Bowl crown with their current receivers group and experts predict they will be shopping for a receiver in the trade market.
Kadarius Toney was bashed on social media
Fans on social media, especially the Chiefs fans bashed Kadarius Toney following his disastrous performance against the Lions on Thursday. Many implied that the Kansas City-based football might end up cutting Toney before week 2 because of his horrific performance. Check out some of the reactions below!
Nonetheless, it is highly unlikely the Chiefs would be releasing one of their best talents because of one bad game. However, they might be on the market to add one or more receivers to their roster. The Chiefs’ All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce is expected to be back for their week 2 game but still, in the long run, they certainly need a true number 1 receiver.
The Chiefs are scheduled to face the Trevor Lawrence-led Jacksonville Jaguars next weekend in their week 2 game. Mahomes and the Chiefs would be looking to redeem themselves with a victory in that tough road game.
