Wide receiver Kadarius Toney of the Kansas City Chiefs is not anticipated to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII, a league source informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Toney struggled with injuries and inconsistent play this season, despite being a star of Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last year. Toney hasn’t played since deflecting a pass to a defender for an interception in the second half of this season during a Week 15 game against the New England Patriots.
However, he was not listed on the Chiefs’ injury report for their Super Bowl matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. When asked on Tuesday if Toney would play, Chiefs coach Andy Reid responded, “we’ll see,” adding that Toney has “been practising, we’ll just see whether he’s up or not.”
Prior to the Chiefs’ victory in the AFC Championship Game, Toney made waves off the pitch when he declared himself “not hurt” in a widely shared Instagram Live video. It was assumed from those remarks that Toney was denying having the hip and ankle injuries that the Chiefs had reported on his weekly injury report.
Toney was instrumental in the team’s victory over the Eagles in the previous Super Bowl, catching a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and setting up another by returning a punt 65 yards. However, the receiver endured a tough time this season and will not be a part of the team for the Super Bowl.
Fans react to Kadarius Toney being left out of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl squad
The Kansas City Chiefs have a shot at creating history this evening. However, they will try to do that without WR Kadarius Toney. The receiver has had a terrible time of late and will be a spectator during the Super Bowl.
Toney was a key player for the Chiefs during their Super Bowl run last season. He made some big plays against the Philadelphia Eagles in the big game as Kansas City pulled off a 38-35 win. However, the former New York Giants’ receiver struggled throughout the regular season and was declared injured prior to the Chiefs’ AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Fans on social media reacted to the news and expressed their thoughts on the receiver’s omission from the team. Here are some of the reactions to the news.
Toney was selected by the New York Giants with the 20th overall pick in 2021, and he was traded to the Chiefs the following year. With just one season remaining on his deal, it’s likely that he won’t be playing for the Chiefs in the future.
