Will the Kansas City Chiefs be able to hold on to their key defensive tackle Chris Jones this offseason?

The Kansas City Chiefs have done a mediocre job retaining a lot of players from their Super Bowl-winning roster. It is beneficial for any team to do so, as maintaining team chemistry is integral if a franchise intends to repeat its victory. The Chiefs have faced multiple setbacks despite their attempt to keep team chemistry intact, their star defensive end Frank Clark is no longer on the squad and their wide receiver room is incomplete now after the loss of Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Keeping these circumstances in mind, it has become essential for the Kansas City Chiefs to retain their defensive tackle, Chris Jones. The DT is coming off a 15.5 sack season and has tremendously improved from the previous year. The team restructured his contract in 2021 and this year; he is expected to make $28 million with a base salary of $19.5 million.
This will be the last year of his contract which he signed in 2020, which means that he is due for an extension, however, the talks surrounding that have been quiet. The two sides are unlikely to reach an agreement of any sort before the conclusion of the NFL Draft as per NFL Insider Albert Breer.

Chris Jones has stated he intends to win the NFL MVP award for the 2023 season
Albert Breer via Sports Illustrated shared his thoughts on the Chris Jones situation. “I wouldn’t say it’s no longer happening. I think this negotiation, like a lot of them, is probably back-burnered until after the draft. I could still see the Chiefs adding a veteran receiver over the next couple weeks, and there could be an extra need or two to be addressed coming out of the draft, and all of that can affect how you’d structure a big deal like Jones’ promises to be.”
The Chiefs need to work on their wideout room. They did lose Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster. The two played a significant role and greatly helped their offense in the last season. Adding a veteran does seem to be a great option, but the Chiefs missed out on adding Adam Thielen or Odell Beckham Jr. who would have been a great fit for them. While the offense attempts to make some roster upgrades, it is key that the Chiefs retain what is left of their defensive roster.
Chris Jones is a seasoned veteran and a vocal presence for all the defensive players, along with his skills and talents on the field. The intangibles he brings will also be hard to replace if the team fails to sign an extension. This season, he was in contention to win the Defensive Player of the Year honor, however; he came in behind Nick Bosa and was unable to win it.
Chris Jones is in his prime. At just 28 years old, he put up numbers for the team with 30 solo tackles, 14 assists, and one fumble recovery in 17 games. The DT will just get better and he has set sky-high expectations for himself for the 2023 season. Recently, he tweeted that he intends to win the MVP award this season. While that goal may be hard to achieve, it is not entirely impossible. If anything, Andy Reid and Brett Veach will do everything in their capacity to ensure Jones sticks around and is happy.
