Katie Sowers, a former NFL coach, took to Twitter on Thursday to share an impactful statement. She said that she is “sickened” by all the hate toward the LGBTQ community all over the world.
The first openly gay coach in the NFL wants all the violence and hate to end. She even instructed that those who are in power and in high positions, including governments, should come forward and put an end to all of it. She pleaded with everyone to stop spreading hate and embrace love.
Katie Sowers began her playing career when she joined West Michigan Mayhem in the Women’s Football Alliance. She later moved to the Kansas City Titans and was called up to the United States National American Football Team. While being part of the team, she won the IFAF Women’s World Championship in 2013. However, due to a hip injury, she had to retire early in 2016.
Sowers has one more first in her long list of achievements: she is the first female coach of a professional NFL team.
Katie Sowers want an end to all the hate against the LGBTQ community to end
After her retirement from playing the game, Sowers took charge of the Atlanta Falcons as a wide receivers coaching intern in 2016 and subsequently became the offensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers. Afterward, she was appointed coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021, and currently, she works in the athletic department of Ottawa University.
Before the start of the 2017 NFL season, Sowers, while employed by the Falcons, came out as gay. Since then, she has voiced her opinions about the place of gay people in sports.
On Thursday, she sent out a strong message to end violence against the LGBTQ community. She wrote, “As the first openly gay coach in the [@NFL], I am sickened to see a world growing more and more dangerous for the LGBTQ community. This needs to stop, and in order to make that happen, we need those in power to help create change. ERR ON LOVE! Stop the hate.”
Her message comes after the recent surge in crime against the LGBTQ community in various fields. Many are fighting their battles in different areas of the world, even though their agenda is the same. Recent policy changes in some governments have come under scrutiny for being unfriendly to the gay community. That is probably one of the reasons Sowers wants the government to step up and implement changes that help the queer community.
