“I’m not a troublemaker”: Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph releases first statement following deadly shooting incident
Kelvin Joseph was acquitted in the March 18th shooting outside a nightclub in Dallas.
Kelvin Joseph, the defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys had not yet issued a public comment regarding the March 18th shooting. An innocent man, Cameron Ray, 20, was killed that night when he was in Lower Greenville celebrating his birthday with some of his friends. A few minutes later, a car drove by him and his friends, and shots were fired at Ray, killing him. Kelvin Joseph was in the car along with the suspected gunman, as per Fox 4 News.
The cornerback released his first statement regarding this incident via a media call. Defending himself, he had this to say, “I’m Kelvin Joseph, I’m a child of God. I’m a son, I’m a father to a son. I’m a leader. I’m a learner. And most of all, I’m a smart kid, and I’m not a troublemaker or somebody who is just going to cause problems or do anything like that.”
Initially, his role in this incident was suspected by law enforcement as well as the Cowboys, as before the shooting, an altercation had taken place between two groups of friends that included Joseph and Ray as per ESPN. The cornerback’s lawyer admitted his client was a passenger in the vehicle from which the shots were fired, but he did not take part in the shooting.
After further investigation, it was found that he was not directly involved in the shooting and he actively cooperated with the police in their attempt to find the person responsible. Due to his innocence, Dallas decided to retain him on their roster. This decision was a smart one, as Kelvin Joseph has shown constant improvement on the field, playing a valuable role in special teams.
Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy released this statement in July regarding Joseph. “I just want you to know that when the situation occurred, we had a lot of internal conversation that was really in-depth. Based on the information we’ve been given. We felt it was important to support him.” Law enforcement in the Dallas region has also acquitted the corner from any wrongdoing.
Kelvin Joseph was in the wrong place at the wrong time:
This does not mean all is well for him, the NFL is yet to announce if it intends to take any action against the corner or not. The league has investigated and looked into the incident, however; it has not yet released any statement on this. The cornerback is trusting the Cowboys to handle it and is not stressing himself over the situation.
“My team is handling the situation, I’m not going to really address anything on that topic today. I’m just going to focus on football.” He trusts the Cowboys organization and is not wasting his time worrying about what the league’s punishment.
He did not issue any comments publicly to the family of Ray, the deceased. The case seems to have been closed now as the Dallas police have charged two men associated with the corner, Aries Jones, 28, and Tivione English, 21, both of them hail from Baton Rouge, the hometown of Joseph.
Kelvin Joseph has had to endure a rough road since he arrived in the league. The Dallas Cowboys took a chance on him and the corner appears to have been in line as there have been no complaints about his work ethic and maturity to date. He has been extremely grateful to the Cowboys for trusting him.
“I appreciate the Dallas Cowboys for taking a chance on me, I’m happy to be a pro, and I’m going to continue to treat myself as a pro and move as a pro.” The Dallas Cowboys will face the Chicago Bears on Sunday and look to improve to a 6-2 season record.
