Keyshawn Johnson hits back at Warren Sapp for his comments, stating that the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate followed him around when he signed with the franchise. Needless to say, Keyshawn did not take those words to heart.
Those two were key cogs in the Bucs’ triumphant 2002 Super Bowl-winning season. Not only did they change the landscape, but they continued to dominate football for a few more years.
However, what appeared to be friendship between comrades came only from the outside. Johnson’s recent remarks point in that direction. Sapp claimed that the versatile wide receiver used to follow him around when he moved to Tampa. However, the 51-year-old completely denied his words.
“I would never in a million years follow you, sorry as* ever,” Keyshwan Johnson wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “You are an embarrassment to society. Sorry, and I mean sorry. Please keep my name out of your mouth, fake a*s MF. Sad. Go get some help. Tired of you using my name. The only dude I would follow is #55 [Derrick Brooks].”
But why the sudden outrage against Sapp? The Pro Football Hall of Famer’s unwarranted comments are the reason. In a recent segment of Fearless with Jason Whitlock, Sapp reflected on his time spent with Johnson. While he called the host of FS 1’s Undisputed a ‘special player’ but not someone who could be a ‘leader.’
“He [Keyshawn Johnson] didn’t lead us,” Warren Sapp told Whitlock. “That’s why we got in Joe Jurevicius and went and got Keenan McCardell.”
When asked if he would ever take Johnson as one of his teammates if the chance ever arose, Sapp said that even though he sees the former Jets playmaker as a ‘brother’, he would never want him as his ‘teammate’ ever again.
Do Keyshwan Johnson and Warren Sapp dislike each other?
Both were great players during their time in the NFL. Besides lifting the Lombardi Trophy, they have several personal achievements. But all in all, in terms of purposes, Warren Sapp has more accolades to his name.
The 50-year-old made the Pro Bowl seven times, compared to Keyshawn Johnson’s three times. Sapp was also part of the 1990s and 2000s NFL Team of the Decade.
No one can take their achievements from them. But sometimes a few statements can sour the relationship not only between two friends but also with the general public. Sapp is known to rile up the crowd with his comments, similar to his latest take.
As per the New York Post, he once called Johnson “a little bi**” on live television. He did apologize later on, but it was only directed at Keyshawn rather than all the audience members who watched him say those words. That was way back in 2008.
