Kirk Cousins to 49ers trade rumors rise high due to Vikings QB’s past with Kyle Shanahan

Kirk Cousins is a reliable QB for the Minnesota Vikings and has been for a long time since being signed by them in 2018. Cousins is one of the first names on the team sheet in Minnesota and proved his capability by putting in spectacular performances last season.
Cousins kicked off his NFL journey with the Washington Redskins, now Washington Commanders. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL draft. There he had a great offensive coordinator with him, Kyle Shanahan.
It seems that connection will come to fruition now, as there are strong rumors of Cousins being traded to the 49ers as their backup QB. The rumors have taken a great rise in the past few days, and even Mike Florio believes that the 49ers can make a move for the 34-year-old QB.
“Apparently, at the scouting combine, there was some chatter, there was some noise, among people within the broader league structure, not the media, but people in the league about Cousins being traded to the 49ers,” Florio said. “That was a hot topic at one point in Indianapolis.”
Although the rumors are extremely exciting, it’s hard to believe them. Kirk Cousins has been rumored to join the 49ers since Shanahan took over as the HC for them. However, they were the strongest when the 49ers’ HC planned to sign Cousins as a free agent several years ago but decided to opt for Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots.
Kyle Shanahan and Kirk Cousins could still reunite in San Francisco
Kirk Cousins was drafted by the Commanders in 2012 when Kyle Shanahan was part of the coaching staff there. The duo had a great relationship there and really understood each other.
However, they had to go their separate ways. While speculations circulate, they could possibly be reunited in San Francisco since the 49ers have room in their budget cap and can pay the Vikings QB after renegotiating his contract.
Cousins has the potential to excel at the organization. He led the Vikings to the NFC North title last year with an average team. If he moves to the 49ers, then he can cause some serious damage.
On the other hand, the 49ers’ QB position is also looking very bleak. Brock Purdy will probably be out till October. Trey Lance suffered a brutal injury last season that kept him out of play. With Jimmy G joining the Raiders, there’s an opening for a starter in the organization where Kirk Cousins can truly excel at.
