The San Francisco 49ers team is presently facing a lot of questions regarding their unawareness of the revised overtime rules after the defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. After the game, their fullback Kyle Juszczyk claimed in front of the press that the players were not aware of the revised rule of the OT.
Here is what he had to say:
You know what? I didn't even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime. I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win.Kyle Juszczyk said
Since then, the Niners team has been facing a lot of criticism. The head coach, Kyle Shanahan finally opened up regarding the controversy. The HC claimed that the coin toss does not matter anymore as things no longer depend on it.
Shanahan said according to ESPN:
We told everyone as we were waiting for the coin toss to review everyone to make sure they're sure before we go out. So, we asked position coaches to do that. But I didn't cover it in a meeting on the Super Bowl week. I don't think that changes anything.Kyle Shanahan said
The NFL changed the overtime rule in March 2022. Before that, the NFL used to decide the winner based on the team that scored first. Since then, the NFL has been giving both teams equal possession regardless of which team scores first, until the time runs out.
The same happened in the game against the Chiefs. The 49ers took the lead first but the Chiefs came back with a touchdown drive from Patrick Mahomes. With that, they sealed the Championship for the second consecutive time.
Stephen A. Smith criticized the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan for their overtime blunder
If anyone is upset with the blunder that the 49ers made, then he is none other than Stephen A. Smith. He claimed that a team like the 49ers should not be making excuses like that. He further claimed that a coach like Kyle Shanahan needed to be aware of the OT rules.
Here is what Stephen A. Smith had to say on Undisputed:
No. 1, this particular situation is a smear on the entire organization–and let me tell you why. No. 1, you’re the coach, Kyle Shanahan. It’s your job to make sure you articulate what the situation is, and that your players know all the rules they need to know. That’s No. 1!
Stephen A. Smith said
The Niners team wants to get over the things that happened in the playoffs. They will be looking forward to burying the ghosts of this season with a strong showing next season.
