“You don’t know until you get your a** kicked”: Kyle Shanahan is not completely sold on Trey Lance being the 49ers’ franchise quarterback

It’s the end of an era in San Francisco, not a good one but a rather tumultuous period, Jimmy Garoppolo took the team to multiple post-seasons and a Super Bowl, but he underperformed in all those games. So it comes as no surprise that the San Francisco 49ers have had enough of him. They drafted Trey Lance with their pick in the draft last year, and he has had an entire year where he was groomed by the vets, and this offseason, he seems to have secured the QB1 job.

Lance has been getting in all the reps at both the voluntary minicamp as well as the mandatory minicamp, Jimmy G is off rehabbing his injured shoulder, he did get surgery and looking at the way things are, he is just waiting and watching for some team to trade for him. Lance has already impressed the existing receiver core, George Kittle went as far as to tell that he has a very high ceiling.

The rookie quarterback had a shaky start to his NFL career which is not surprising, he did not play much at North Dakota State either, but the combination of his deadly arm strength and run-ability makes him the perfect dynamic QB you want to have in your corner.

Coach Kyle Shanahan had a lot to say about his quarterback at a press conference, “The biggest thing with Trey that people have to realize is he is younger, he has more horsepower inside of him than I think he even knows of. Just from the whole talent, but also what he’s made of, how intelligent he is. I think he’s going to be able to overcome adversity. I do believe he’s going to handle this pressure. It’s going to be hard, that’s what the position is. And there are only so many people in this world who have the talent to be put in this spot. There might be 32 of them but there definitely aren’t 32 who have the talent and who have the stuff inside that allows you to handle that position through the ups and downs.”

This marks a switch from the HC’s approach from last season, he refrained from talking much about his rookie as he did not have enough time to prepare and was put in a rough situation. This season, however, things are much different as Lance has had a lot of time to study the detailed offense of the team and he has put in all of the reps with the starters as well. This has led to some form of chemistry being built between the players, in short, it’s Jimmy’s time to shine.

“I don’t care how good you are, people are going to come after you. You look at people like Peyton Manning who played so much football in his life and what he did his rookie year and how many picks he threw, he was made of the right stuff, and he was able to overcome things,” Shanahan stated that you cannot expect every player to come flying out the gates, some of them may have a bad first year but that does not mean they are busts as some players need time to fit into the league.

With a full offseason, coach Shanahan believes that Lance is ready to go to the next level. However, he is also aware that it may not be a smooth ride, “You really don’t know until you get your ass kicked, because that’s when it starts, and you’re going to. It might be preseason, it might be Week 1, but it’s going to happen, and then we’ll know if you can play. How do you come to practice on Wednesday? How do you get in a position where that ain’t happening again? Some guys are like, ‘How do I avoid that?’ The guys on our team have the ability. Our quarterback has the ability. A lot of guys you don’t know about having the ability. We’re going to put them through the wringer during the season, then you find if they can do it for the long haul,” he concluded.

San Fransisco has given up a lot to ensure that they make the best environment for Trey Lance to succeed in, the team is definitely not in any rebuilding phase and they want to go back to the Super Bowl at the earliest. Will Lance live up to the hype or not is yet to be seen.
