The San Francisco 49ers looked invincible through the first 5 weeks of the ongoing NFL season. However, as soon as their left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel got hurt in their week 6 game, the season took a wrong turn for the Niners. And now, the 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is trying to figure out how to snap their 3-game losing streak and one possibility includes moving their defensive coordinator Steve Wilks to the sidelines.

A day after suffering a brutal 31-17 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, the 49ers’ head coach Shanahan jumped on a conference call with reporters on Monday to talk about his team’s plans moving forward. During the press conference, Shanahan was asked whether he is planning to move DC Steve Wilks to the sidelines and the Niners HC didn’t rule out that possibility.

I mean, that’s something we’ll discuss this week, just the two of us. If he felt it would help him that’s something we’ll try, but we haven’t done that yet.
Shanahan told reporters on Monday.

Steve Wilks just joined the 49ers in the 2023 off-season after the former Niners DC DeMeco Ryans left San Fran for a head coaching gig with the Houston Texans. Both Ryans and his predecessor Robert Saleh worked from the sidelines, which worked out well for the team and themselves. And now, Wilks — who has more than 15 years of experience as a coach in the NFL — could be getting moved to the sidelines.

This conversation arose after Wilks’ ‘zero blitz blunder’ in the 49ers’ week 7 game against the Minnesota Vikings, which eventually lost them the game. Wilks took full responsibility for the loss and said he wished he could take back that decision to call a zero blitz in that crucial time.

Kyle Shanahan and the Niners have a perfect bye week to regroup

On Sunday, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers suffered a brutal loss against the Bengals in their week 8 game. That was the Niners’ 3 consecutive loss in the ongoing NFL season.

As a result, the Niners fell to 5-3 after starting the season with 5 consecutive wins. Now, the Niners have a bye in week 9, which will be perfect for them to regroup and make some changes in their approach.

After the bye week, the Niners are scheduled to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are currently tied for the best record in the AFC with 6 wins and just 2 losses. The 49ers would look to bounce back with a victory when they face the Jaguars in less than a couple of weeks.
