The San Francisco 49ers have come off as the top dog this season, as they became the first team in the league to secure a playoff berth. It happened after the team defeated the Seattle Seahawks by 28-16, followed by the Green Bay Packers falling short against the New York Giants on the Sunday Night Football game.

As moving forward in the league, the 49ers are focused on one thing — securing the No. 1 NFC seed. It was held by the unbeatable Philadelphia Eagles earlier for their 10-1 season record. However, after being defeated by San Francisco and Dallas Cowboys in weeks 13 and 14, they have fallen second in the NFC East at 10-3.

Both the 49ers and the Cowboys had high odds of securing the playoff berth in week 14, however, Kyle Shanahan-led San Francisco became the first to achieve it. The two teams are currently tied for the top seed in the NFC, with a standing of 10-3, while their quarterback Brock Purdy has the shortest odds for the MVP award with +300, tied with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

After securing the playoff berth again this season, the 49ers built a three-season streak of qualifying for the postseason, the longest since 2013. Now, they aim for the top NFC seed. With four games remaining in the 2023 regular season, the team isn’t celebrating just yet, as a lot can happen in these four weeks.

When asked to the head coach Shanahan about his reaction to the 49ers securing the playoff berth, he said,

I'll have a reaction when it is the number one spot, if it is, because that's when the season ends.

He underlined that the team isn’t glorifying this as

it doesn't mean much. It just means where you're at now. And I know we won't be that if we don't handle business this week. So that's really all we're worried about this week, and then we'll move to who we play after that.

San Francisco 49ers officially signed Jason Verrett

For nearly a month, San Francisco vigorously pursued the veteran cornerback and locker-room favorite Jason Verrett. But he didn’t sign until he saw how far the team had come with the victory against the Seahawks at 28-16 at Levi’s Stadium.

Shortly after attending the game, Verrett officially signed the practice squad of the 49ers and reunited with his former squad. The cornerback was removed due to his Achilles injury, which he sustained last year during a practice session with the 49ers.

Throughout his NFL career, the veteran Verrett has been through several injuries, but none of them outweighed the performance he gave when he got on the field, proving himself one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
