The Arizona Cardinals had a disastrous 2022/23 season in the National Football League, as they ended the regular season with a 4-13 record. Needless to say that they did not manage to qualify for the playoffs finishing bottom of the NFC West division.

With the majority of the blame falling on the shoulders of head coach Kliff Kingsbury for not being able to produce results, it did not come as much surprise when the franchise decided to fire him immediately after the regular season. Six months after that decision Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has now fired shots at his former head coach.

The quarterback reflected on the horrendous season endured by the Cardinals while venting his frustrations about not being involved in important recruiting decisions starting from the NFL draft. He also aimed a sly dig at Kingsbury, claiming that their plays weren’t sustainable and eventually the franchise made the right decisions.

“I’m thinking of stuff that I wasn’t part of, like the draft, who we were gonna get, young players coming out,” Murray said, according to the Cardinals’ website. “The whole (last) year was sh*t. It happened for a reason. The things we were doing weren’t sustainable for success … It was necessary and in turn good will come out of what happened. The things we were doing weren’t sustainable for success.”

Murray and Kingsbury did not have a great rapport between themselves, and emotions boiled over even on the gridiron on several occasions. The most notable of their arguments came during the Cardinals’ Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints. The 25-year-old shouted angrily at his head coach asking him to calm down, and it needed DeAndre Hopkins’ intervention to get them away from each other.

According to various reports, the relationship between Murray and Kingsbury had become extremely strained by the end of the season and therefore radical decision-making was needed to get the team sorted for the next season. Murray will hope for a better season under the leadership of new head coach Jonathan Gannon and new general manager Monti Ossenfort.
