“He needs to fix his game”: Bernard Pollard does not consider Lamar Jackson a Super Bowl caliber QB

Lamar Jackson is a unique player, both on and off the field. While playing on the field, he tends to make use of his legs more than his hands which is unheard of for a quarterback, and off the field, he is probably the only superstar player who does not have an agent and he represents himself. This does not make sense for a player of his talent and in a league where we see teams always trying to drive a hard bargain regarding player’s contracts, it seems more sensible to have an agent.
The quarterback is now involved in talks of getting an extension with the Ravens. Lamar could very well have been a sports agent if he weren’t playing in the league as he seems to be playing hardball with the Ravens as well. In light of his contract talks, he went back and forth with Bernard Pollard Jr., a former Raven who is a Super Bowl champion as well.
“He misunderstood what I was saying”: Bernard Pollard was being supportive of Jackson and not critiquing him
It all started with a tweet from Bernard Pollard who was rather critical of Lamar when he stated that no top wideout would want to play with him as they only go to the top quarterbacks who are good at throwing the ball. They respect him but they do not want to be with him as he cannot throw the ball efficiently. Jackson was probably having a bad day as he snapped and did something unusual, he responded to Bernard and clapped back at him. The duo went back and forth for a while.
Bernard Pollard appeared on the Colin Cowherd Show to speak about his spat with Lamar and to clarify what he thinks of Lamar Jackson. “He misunderstood, I said, ‘This dude should be the top paid quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens,’ the Ravens are the only place that has to pay him top dollar, Whatever (Deshaun) Watson got, Lamar, should get plus 15-20 million more guaranteed, just because of what he’s done for the organization. I do believe he needs to fix his game to take this team to the Promised Land,” the safety states.
He goes ahead to praise Lamar Jackson and speculate on why the receiver Marquise Hollywood Brown opted for free agency and got himself traded to the Arizona Cardinals. “He knew they weren’t going to pay him, knowing him and Lamar were coming up to be paid. He knew that wasn’t happening and he wasn’t happy with that so he wanted to get out of town,” the former safety for the Ravens adds.
Speaking on the Ravens offense in 2022, he had this to say, “When you talk about this offense, I hear so many people say talk about Greg Roman (Ravens offensive coordinator), he’s holding Lamar back. I think if you get a new OC, he exposes what Lamar can’t do. Lamar is a special talent, he’s legs first and then his arms second. He’s a guy that moves defenses with his legs. Defenses fear him because of his ability to run, when it comes to the ability to throw the football, he lacks in those areas.” Pollard concludes by criticizing the Ravens for always believing that their quarterback is better than the best player of the other team. “Backyard football is not sustainable in this National Football League.”
Lamar Jackson does have a lot to prove this season, especially considering that his name has been dragged through the mud for not being able to throw the football. His market value also was taking a toll as he is currently in contract talks with the Ravens. However, the quarterback seems to be rather relaxed and not stressing it out indicating that he is maybe tired of talking and is itching to get back there on the field and prove it with his game this year.
