The Lamar Jackson contract dispute has been going on for over a year now. This very public feud between the organization and the quarterback started last March after Deshaun Watson was given a massive $230 million fully guaranteed contract that spanned over five years, which came along with a $44.965 million signing bonus.

Jackson, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens as the last pick of the first round in 2018, was initially offered a six-year, $133 million fully guaranteed contract extension as he entered the final year of his rookie contract. However, he declined it, believing that he could improve and earn more. Moreover, seeing Watson get such a huge load of money after not playing for almost a year and amidst all the sexual harassment lawsuits against him, Jackson was confident that the Ravens can shell out the big bucks for the 2019 Unanimous NFL MVP.

Jackson’s plan didn’t go according to his expectations, and the Ravens’ front office couldn’t get him to agree to a lesser amount. Then in Week 13, Jackson suffered a sprained PCL and didn’t play for the rest of the regular season. He updated his injury status on Twitter prior to the Ravens facing the Bengals in the wild-card game that suggested he wasn’t going to pad up for one of the most important games of the season.

With Tyler Huntley at quarterback, the Baltimore Ravens did give the Cincinnati Bengals a run for their money and almost managed to win the game, but couldn’t. Bengals’ Sam Hubbard scored a historic 98-yard return touchdown after Huntley lost possession of the ball a yard short of Cincinnati’s endzone that destroyed the Ravens’ lead. Baltimore had a chance to tie the game and send it into OT, but the Hail-Mary pass from Huntley kissed the fingers of James Proche and slipped away, ultimately making the Bengals victorious.

After the Ravens’ close defeat, Lamar Jackson posted a cryptic story on his Instagram story. It read: “When you have something good, you don’t play with it. You don’t take chances losing it. You don’t neglect it. When you have something good, you pour into it. You appreciate it. Because when you take care of something good, that good thing takes care of you too.”

What Jackson meant by it can be interpreted in different ways. Additionally, when a player is at the end of his contract and is waiting for getting traded or a contract extension, everything he says or does is hyper-analyzed and the same is being done to Jackson’s latest story.

Now that the Ravens’ season has ended, they can finally come to a conclusion to Lamar Jackson’s contract negotiations. Whether he stays in Baltimore on a franchise tag, which is still an option, or he gets his money or the Ravens trade him to a club that is willing to pay him upward of $200 million guaranteed will be known soon enough.
