Lamar Jackson has been one of the NFL’s most dynamic and exciting players since entering the league, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of his first three seasons and winning the league’s MVP award in 2019. His next contract is expected to be one of the richest in NFL history, according to many NFL insider sources.
The Ravens and Jackson are at a standstill as the QB has yet to sign a contract that will see him as a Ravens player for many years to come. Although rumors are strong that he will sign the contract, the primary concern is the amount of that contract.
Jackson’s rookie contract expired after the 2022 season, but the Ravens had the option to exercise his fifth-year option for the 2023 season, which they did. This means that Jackson will be under contract with the Ravens through the 2023 season unless he signs an extension before then.
However, new reports suggest that Jackson has made his demands known to the Ravens. The 26-year-old QB wants a contract that is similar to that of Browns QB Deshaun Watson.
Watson has the richest contract in NFL history that guarantees him $230 million for 5 seasons. Jackson wants a contract similar to that, if not better. The Ravens QB recently turned down a $250 million for 5 years, that guaranteed him $133 million.
Jackson has sent various counteroffers to the Ravens and all of those counteroffers were more than what was guaranteed to Deshaun Watson when he was traded from the Texans. The Ravens are in a conundrum and will have to come up with a resolution anytime soon.
The Ravens are in a dilemma regarding Lamar Jackson’s contract
Jackson is one of the best young QBs in the league. The Ravens QB has also led the NFL for rushing as a QB for a couple of seasons now. This makes him a deadly player for any team.
Ravens will do all in their power to retain Jackson, as he is currently their most prized possession. However, they only have a cap space of $24,288,480.
There are also reports suggesting that the Ravens won’t match Deshaun Watson’s contract as they are not as desperate as the Browns were. “Just because the Browns were desperate doesn’t mean that the Ravens are,” one high-ranking NFL executive said. “They are a stable franchise. They aren’t about to jump at something just because Cleveland did it.”
Lamar Jackson has the potential to be the best QB in the league. Therefore, there will be many takers if the Ravens QB hits free agency next season.
