The New England Patriots’ Malik Cunningham had an impressive NFL debut. The University of Louisville quarterback got a lot of support after that performance, most notably from Baltimore Ravens‘ star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Jackson, a former teammate of Cunningham at Louisville, commented “QB1” on Cunningham’s Instagram post. He also took to the social media platform X a quote-tweeted a highlight of Cunningham against the Houston Texans and wrote “Broski”.
Jackson seems to have given his verdict on who should be the QB1 in New England. One can see a lot of similarities between Jackson and Cunningham. They are both dual-threat quarterbacks who played together in their college days.
Cunningham might have to wait for his chance though as Mac Jones has pretty much secured that QB1 status to start the season. If Thursday’s performance is anything to go by, Cunningham might find some situational playing time going forward.
The Patriots play their first game of the season against Jackson the Baltimore Ravens on September 10 in Baltimore. Jones will be expected to start that game and Cunningham will have to wait for his opportunity, even if Jackson says otherwise.
Malik Cunningham getting more reps after an impressive NFL debut
The New England Patriots signed undrafted free agent Malik Cunningham in 2023. After practicing mostly as a wide receiver, Cunningham played at quarterback against the Houston Texans in the Patriots’ first preseason game. He had an impressive outing going 3/4 for 19 yards in the air and rushed for 34 yards with one TD.
After an impressive debut, Cunningham reportedly got more reps as a quarterback yesterday. He initially signed as a wide receiver with the Patriots but after a stellar performance on Friday, has been rewarded with more reps at quarterback.
Cunningham was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2023 USFL draft. He opted not to play in the USFL and instead committed to the NFL draft. He was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent. After Friday’s performance, it looks like a wise move to on his part.
He will get more playing time in the Patriots’ upcoming preseason games and will look to build on his great start. The Patriots will play the Green Bay Packers and the Tennessee Titans in their remaining preseason games.
