Football fans aren’t thrilled with Lamar Jackson winning the NFL MVP Award. Even though the Baltimore Ravens quarterback was an overwhelming favorite to win the trophy, a section of fans on social media were adamant that Christian McCaffrey deserved the honor more.

Usually, the MVP award goes to the best player in the league throughout the regular season. And Jackson was the frontrunner for the majority of the 2023 calendar, topping most publication lists as the favorite candidate to win. McCaffrey was hot on his heels, along with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

After a couple of injury-hit seasons, cutting his games to 12, Jackson managed 16 last campaign. He showcased why the pundits label him as one of the few dual-threat quarterbacks in the league. The Louisville graduate completed 307 passes from 457 attempts with a success rate of 67.2 (best in his career) for 3,678 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and 148 carries for 821 rushing yards, with an average of 5.5 yards per carry (best in his career) and 5 touchdowns.

On Thursday night, in Las Vegas, Jackson received his second Associated Press NFL MVP award. The 27-year-old was a unanimous winner for the 2019 season. Jackson came close to repeating the same feat once again, as he got 49 of 50 first-place votes.

Football fans on social media argued that Christian McCaffrey deserved the NFL MVP award over Lamar Jackson

Soon after the results went public, fans weren’t happy with Lamar Jackson being chosen as the winner. They pointed out that San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey deserved the title more. McCaffrey had a lights-out campaign, rushing for a career-best 1459 yards for 14 touchdowns along with 67 receptions for 564 yards (second in the league in 2023) and scoring seven touchdowns.

He also led the league in total touches from the line of scrimmage with 339 and yards with 2023. McCaffrey is one of the primary reasons that the 49ers won the NFC Championship title for the first time since 2019 and are close to winning another Super Bowl (last won in 1994).

The fans argue that these credentials are enough for the 27-year-old to be named the best player in the league over Jackson. Or else, as Tyreek Hill claimed last December, the MVP award “is a quarterback award. We all know that.

After receiving the award, Jackson said,

I want to thank my organization, the Baltimore Ravens, for finally getting a deal done.

He joined the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Jim Brown, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Kurt Warner, and Steve Young, who have been named the best NFL players multiple times. MVPs usually mean that they will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the future.
