The Houston Texans just locked up their cornerstone left tackle Laremy Tunsil for the next three years with a massive contract extension. There were rumors that the 3-time Pro Bowl tackle could be on the trade market, but the Texans decided to keep the franchise left tackle tied to their team even if it means making him the highest-paid tackle in NFL history.
The Texans signed Laremy Tunsil to a 3-year $75 million, including 60 million in guaranteed money. Tunsil also gets a 3 million dollar signing bonus and his cap hit for 2023 will be $34,960,834. For comparison, the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes‘ cap hit for 2023 will be $39,693,381. This is obviously a massive contract for an offensive lineman.
In fact, this deal makes him the highest-paid offensive tackle in average annual salary, surpassing the 49ers‘ OT Trent Williams. With this signing, the Texans’ offensive line is starting to look pretty good. They have Tunsil, and last year’s first-round draft pick Kenyon Green at left guard and they recently acquired Shaq Mason, a solid right guard from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
So whichever quarterback they decide to draft with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft will have a pretty good offensive line protecting them. Besides, the Texans could now look to fill their other needs in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Social media reacts to Laremy Tunsil’s savage tweet
After signing a massive 3-year deal with the Texans, the Pro Bowl left tackle celebrated the news with a funny meme on social media. His tweet received mixed reactions from the fans as some thought that it was good that he got paid, while others thought Tunsil only cares about money instead of winning a championship.
Laremy Tunsil’s path has always been a weird one. He was considered a Top 5 draft prospect coming out of college but his off-field activities plummeted his stock during the 2016 Draft Day, which led to the Miami Dolphins scooping him up with their 13th overall pick.
After spending 3 years with the Dolphins, Tunsil was traded to the Texans for a haul of draft picks which stunned the whole as people thought that the Houston-based franchise is overpaying for an offensive lineman. The Dolphins received 2 first-round picks, a second-round pick, and two players.
But in the end, it worked out well for the Texans since Laremy Tunsil received 3 Pro Bowl nods during his first 4 years in Houston and it looks like he will continue playing at a high level for the next few years.
