Tom Brady has been touring Australia for the past few days, visiting several places, including a zoo in Brisbane. While getting acquainted with his new friends, someone told him it was time to check out the “Mahomes exhibit.” Clearly, it was a nod to Patrick Mahomes.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is the only active player who can challenge Brady’s “GOAT” (greatest of all time) legacy. Yet it seems that the 46-year-old isn’t ready to count Mahomes in the same bracket because, when they showed the goats to Bardy and told him “Mahomes exhibit,” it brought out massive laughter from him.
Can anyone blame him, though? Tom Brady is the only football player to win seven Super Bowls. Even though Mahomes will play for his third ring (4 Super Bowls) in six years as a starter, he still has a long journey ahead of him.
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes: head to head
Credit should be given where credit is due. The 2023 season was a down year for Mahomes and the Chiefs, yet they made the playoffs. They dismantled the Miami Dolphins, outplayed the Buffalo Bills, and edged past the Baltimore Ravens in their own backyard to reach another Bowl game.
If the 6-time Pro Bowler is in the mix for the conversation, he has done what is necessary to be in it. Brady is undeniably the current GOAT of football. But how about comparing the first seven years of their careers? Mahomes does outshine Brady in that regard.
Both played 96 games, in which Mahomes had 28,424 passing yards, 219 touchdowns, a 66.5% completion rate, and 74 quarterback wins compared to Brady’s 21,564 yards, 147 touchdowns, a 61.9% completion rate, and 70 wins. Besides that, the 2-ring holder also loves to use his feet (1,936 rushing yards), unlike Brady (239 rushing yards).
Okay, Mahomes may have the edge in their first 7 years as football players in the regular season. Then what about post-season football? Brady’s resume is vast because his longevity was legendary. He currently has an impressive 14-3 record in the playoffs.
Brady played a combined 48 post-season games for the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had 1200 pass completions, 13,400 passing yards, and 88 passing touchdowns, for a completion rate of 62.5%. Mahomes threw 422 completions, 4,802 passing yards, and 39 passing touchdowns in 17 games, for a completion rate of 67.4%.
It’s still too early to include Patrick Mahomes in the same sentence as Tom Brady. However, at the rate he is going and winning trophies, if he plays for as long as Brady, then there’s every possibility he may equal the record or even surpass it.
