“He’s on track”, Lions GM Brad Holmes drops a massive hint on WR Jameson Williams’ potential comeback date after ACL injury

A projected comeback date for coveted rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams was not provided by Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes. Holmes though, added, that he and the club aren’t worried and are proceeding cautiously with the receiver’s ACL injury recovery.

Williams was hurt while representing Alabama in the January national championship game. The quick rookie will miss at least the first four games of the season since he will start the season on the non-football injury list (because the ACL rupture occurred in college).

“He is on track, again, I’m not going to put out a hard date, but I will say, the weeks and weeks he’s strung together with his rehab, and he’s so gifted from a genetic standpoint,” Holmes said. “Once he keeps that consistency going, it actually could accelerate that return that we’re thinking.

On the sidelines, the rookie has stayed attentive. He spends most of the practice sessions close to the coaches and virtually always has a football with him. Williams seemed to have a unique quality, too. Another incentive to take it carefully and avoid making any forced decisions on the way back is the team’s significantly better receiving position.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds, Kalif Raymond, and Quintez Cephus are among the Lions’ early-season roster players. If anybody needed a reminder of that increased depth, it’s worth mentioning Tom Kennedy’s impressive preseason performance and predictable return to the practice squad, not to mention Cephus’ previous performance as the best choice when healthy.

Jameson Williams was widely considered the best WR at the college level which led the Detroit Lions to draft him

Williams amassed an absurd 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns on 79 receptions for Alabama last season. His highest speed during his lone season in Tuscaloosa was over 23 mph on a 94-yard touchdown in the first game of the previous season.

For the chance to choose Williams in the April draft, the Lions traded up. The Minnesota Vikings received Picks 12 and 46 from Holmes in exchange for Picks 32, 34, and 66. It was an uncommonly bold leap up the pecking order, especially for a wide receiver who was hurt. Holmes admitted to Peter King before training camp that he had previously lived by the maxim “don’t pick wounded men in the first round,” but that he was “totally convicted” about Williams.

In response to a query about Williams’ probable involvement after being given the all-clear, Holmes said it was a topic for head coach Dan Campbell. Williams’ versatility and distinctive skill set were brought up by the general manager, who inquired as to whether or not Williams played special teams if he wasn’t a full-time wide receiver.

Williams, who played some kind of gunner, was an electrifying returner who displayed his aggressiveness against Alabama. He made headlines when, in the same game against rival Auburn, he downed a punt at the 2-yard line and was later penalized for targeting.
