The NFL season 2023-24 has returned with a bang. In the season opener, the Detroit Lions stunned the NFL world by outplaying and beating the Kansas City Chiefs in a closely contested match. The result might have surprised the world but not the Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell. He claimed that he knew the result ahead of the game.

Campbell remained calm despite the stunning victory. He said that he had smelled the result much before. Speaking to the media in a post-match presentation, the head coach said the match did not offer him anything new. Instead, he got clarification of what he already knew.

“I didn’t learn anything. I got verification of what I already knew,” Dan Campbell said in a post-match presentation. According to a report by the Athletic, Campbell worked hard to create a balance in this team. He found the right fit for this team after a lot of struggles. He also infused a belief among the players that they could beat the mighty Chiefs. All of these factors were quite clear on the field. They provided the result that the coach wanted.

The fighting spirit that the coach generated among the players remained evident on the field today. In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs took a lead of 17-14. The Lions provided the best-of-class football when everyone was sure about the Chiefs’ victory. They were defensively rock-solid in the quarter and also provided an offensive masterclass. The Chiefs’ players went helpless in front of the tight defensive display by the Lions.

Where did it go wrong for the Chiefs against Dan Campbell’s Lions?

The Kansas City Chiefs went through many turmoils before the match. They had to play the game without two of their best players. The tight-end Travis Kelce did not play the game due to a major injury. In addition, defensive tackle (DT) Chris Jones did not play and continued to hold out for a new deal. He has stayed away from the training sessions due to holdout.

The absence of both these players hurt the team in both offense and defense. Due to the absence of Kelce, quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not get enough support on the field. In addition, the team also witnessed poor performance from the team’s wide receiver, Kadarius Toney. The absence of Jones also cost them as they failed to keep the lead.

How the Kansas City Chiefs make a comeback in this league is to be seen. They should reach an agreement with Jones on a new deal to have him back on the team. On the other hand, Kelce’s return will depend on the severity of the injury.
