The Kansas City Chiefs knew it would be difficult to contain the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl game. However, they seemed to have the ideal defensive strategy in place. During the Super Bowl LVIII postgame press conference, Kansas City star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed revealed that his team hoped to force San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy to pass the ball.

The run game of the 49ers remains deadly. It could also become a reason Sneed wanted his team to force Purdy into passing. This is what Sneed said:

Yes, we knew they were gonna try to run the ball. We knew what they were gonna try to do. We just wanted Brock to throw the ball.

Sneed’s remarks did not necessarily suggest that the Chiefs saw Purdy as a vulnerability. These were merely an admission that Christian McCaffrey, one of the league’s final three-down workhorse backs and the league leader in rushing yards during the regular season, was the more dangerous player among San Francisco’s offensive weapons.

With an 89.3 passer rating and 23 of 38 completions for 255 yards and one touchdown, Purdy had a strong performance against the Chiefs. Amazingly, Kansas City’s formidable pass rush only forced him to sack the ball once and prevented him from turning the ball over.

Purdy deserves praise for leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl. However, as evidenced by what happened on the field at Allegiant Stadium, he’s still not on the same level as Patrick Mahomes.

The Niners were poised to win the Super Bowl 19–16 with just 6 seconds remaining. But after the field goal and overtime, they were defeated 25–22. Furthermore, QB Purdy largely accepted the blame for the defeat. Check out what Purdy said below:

Purdy felt he could have done better and helped his offense score points. He took the blame for the devastating loss. After this defeat, the Niners haven’t won the Lombardi Trophy in three decades. And against the Chiefs, their nerves got the better of them once more.
