It was only a matter of time before the rumors would turn into reality, the Los Angeles Chargers have expressed interest in giving Jim Harbaugh the Head Coaching role as reported by Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. However, the feeling here may not be mutual as Harbaugh is set to coach the Michigan Wolverines in their third consecutive playoff run to win the college football National Championship.

It was not clear if the Los Angeles Chargers would be willing to take a risk with Jim Harbaugh but now it appears the team has budged. The main issue was the team was on the fence regarding his financial requirements and to give him control of an entire franchise, that too one based out of Los Angeles… it would probably be overwhelming for an individual who has not coached in the NFL for a long time.

Jim Harbaugh’s latest deal with the University of Michigan pays him $36 million over five years. The Chargers, made a sudden move by firing HC Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco earlier this week after the team took a 63-21 beating at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chargers have been consistently bad all season, and it was high time to make some changes.

With Harbaugh, the team will become better but the only bone of contention that is likely to arise will be the amount of autonomy that the coach will demand. The last time he coached in the NFL, Harbaugh wanted more from the San Francisco 49ers franchise financially and in terms of autonomy over the decision-making process and control over the team.

Will the Chargers concede to such demands by the HC? They have to as they do not have the leverage in the negotiations this time. Remember, they expressed interest first. So if they are going to sway Harbaugh’s mind in their favor, they will need to lure him by giving him an offer so good, that he cannot refuse.

In all honesty, the Jim Harbaugh and Los Angeles Chargers combination would be a match made in heaven. The team has a talented quarterback in Justin Herbert who has a work ethic comparable to a maniac. The offense is good but can be made better with some upgrades. The team is not terrible overall from a talent perspective and just needs the right guidance.

Harbaugh has not kept it a secret that he is considering a return to the NFL, he applied to coach the Vikings in January 2022 but Kevin O’Connell got the job over him. After this, the HC did admit to Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press that he was no longer seeking any roles in the NFL. Well, sure but if there is one thing that is certain, when you put up an offer too good to refuse on the table, it does not take long for a No to turn into a Yes.
