“I want to beat Nick Saban”: LSU coach Brian Kelly wants to make his mark in the SEC by taking down a legend
LSU has most recently undergone a head coaching change. The team moved on from coach Ed Orgeron and hired the former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly to lead the tigers to more SEC championships. The team won their last national championship in 2019 with coach Orgeron. The coach during his stint at the school led the team to 49 wins and 20 losses in a timeline of six years. However, now Brian Kelly is the head coach and he has some big shoes to fill.
Kelly had a stellar record at Notre Dame where he had a record of 92 wins and 39 losses. It comes as no surprise that the Tigers had their eyes fixated on him and jumped at the chance to get him as a coach. In his first year at LSU, before accepting the position offered him, Kelly did not even visit the program or take a look at the facilities before accepting the position. “I never visited, It was the alignment between the president, the athletic director, and knowing that you were going to go into a program that had all those things in place. And you were going into a situation where you could compete with Alabama and Auburn and play those teams you wanted to go beat,” Kelly said earlier this week on a podcast.
“Who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban?”: Brian Kelly’s main goal is to win the game against Alabama
Coach Kelly had full faith in the staff and facilities at LSU, he knew they would be the best, “So I know those facilities were in place. It was a challenge. It was the ultimate challenge to come down here after being in the Midwest my entire career where most people said, ‘Well, you can’t do that. You can’t go down there and win in the SEC. You’re not from there.’, “ Kelly stated. He was discouraged by all from going there if he wanted to retain his stellar record but Kelly is always up for a challenge.
“It was probably the challenge to do it, the alignment of an athletic director and president that were together in wanting to provide all the resources necessary to win a national championship.” Brian Kelly wants to make his mark this year and what better way to do it than by taking down Nick Saban?
He wants to play against the best and beat the best, “I want to beat Nick Saban, who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban? You know what I mean? I want to play him in the regular season. That’s the standard. Now, he’s a conference opponent,” Kelly concluded.
Both the coaches are on good terms and they even spoke before Brian became the coach at LSU. His contract with LSU gives him $95 million over a 10-year period. Though everyone wants to take on Saban and Alabama, the question is will they be able to defeat that hurdle? We will have to see!
