After an underwhelming 2022/23 season, the New England Patriots have come out all guns blazing in making adequate changes to their coaching setup for the upcoming NFL season. One of their major problems last season, included quarterback Mac Jones‘ performances which in turn impacted their offensive plays.

Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick‘s decision to not hire an official offensive coordinator dramatically backfired as Matt Patricia and Joe Judge failed to improve the offense throughout the season. The veteran wasn’t going to repeat his mistake this year, as the franchise roped in Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

This will be the second time that O’Brien is included in the Patriots set up after his first stint with them from 2007 to 2011. Incidentally, he occupied the same roles as he has been given this season in his fifth and final year of the contract. He will have his work cut out with Mac Jones, after the quarterback’s middling performances have raised numerous question marks over his status as the starting QB for the upcoming season.

Even though Bill Belichick hasn’t confirmed him the position, Jones is ready for a fresh start with his new QB coach. The 24-year-old acknowledged that he’s got to put in more work, in order to reach the level once again, which he showed everyone in his rookie season.

“I think we’re all excited for this next year, and it just starts with putting your head down and going to work,” Jones said, via Boston.com. “We’ve got a great group of guys, and it’s all about how you come together as a team — players, coaches, everybody. So I’m excited to work with [O’Brien], and I know we all are, and it’s gonna be a great year. We’ve just gotta put the work in.”

Jones seemed pretty confident when asked about the chances of him bagging the starter role next season, and couldn’t wait to get back to work in the offseason.

“[The offseason has] been good,” Jones said. “I think it’s important to just evaluate everything. Obviously, a day like today, it takes your mind off football and you get to enjoy the kids. But I’ve definitely been giving it a lot, just like every year, and just super excited to get back with the guys here soon and get to work.”
