It has been an eventful few days for ESPN and its staff, with massive layoffs throughout the company. Household media personalities and fan favorites were shown the door to cut down on expenses, even though parent company Disney is a massive conglomerate. As of July 2023, it ranked as the 68th richest company with an estimated value of $162.88 billion.

Moreover, ESPN ranks among the most-viewed sports channels in the country. With more than 1.9 million people tuning in daily to watch their favorite sport or listen to experienced analysts, until the recent sackings, which let go some behemoths of the business. Former NFL player turned YouTube sports analyst Marcellus Wiley addressed some of them and singled out ex-teammate Keyshawn Johnson.

Wiley claimed that he knew Keyshawn would be shown the door when ESPN began firing employees. “I (Wiley) knew that this situation was coming for him (Keyshawn Johnson),” said Marcellus Wiley. He predicted that because he apparently had inside knowledge of what was going on.

Wiley mentioned conversing with Max Kellerman before his sacking, indicating that the writing was on the wall. Kellerman knew it was just a matter of time before he was fired from the network.

But why would the same happen with Keyshawn Johnson? The former Cowboy had just signed a five-year deal worth $18 million last year. Moreover, the 50-year-old was part of the network for almost a decade.

Wiley overheard a conversation about Kellerman being appointed as the co-host of First Take. However, Kellerman and Stephen A. did not have “the warmest reception on that show,” and the partnership ended prematurely. Wiley speculates, “even if you are making enough money, they (the ESPN network) are not really supporting you.”

Marcellus Wiley was the 52nd pick in the second round of the 1997 Draft for the Buffalo Bills. He played for them for four seasons and then moved to the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles). The 48-year-old ended his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He retired from professional football in 2006.

Seven years after he hung up his boots, Wiley joined ESPN’s NFL Live and was the co-host of Mike and Mike in the Morning. He was also part of Sports Nation alongside Colin Cowherd.

Later in his career, he switched networks and became part of Speak for Yourself with Jason Whitlock and later Emmanuel Acho on FOX Sports 1. His latest venture is his YouTube channel, where he has 85.4K subscribers. However, he has ambitions to return to television work in the future.
