The NFL hasn’t been kind to 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota. Within 8 years, he has bounced around 5 teams. His new home is the Washington Commanders.

Since the Tennessee Titans selected the former Oregon quarterback as the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota has had spells with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Philadelphia Eagles. and now the commanders. During that time, he has a record of 37 wins and 40 wins, with his best season coming in Tennessee (2017, 9-6).

Last season, he was the backup to Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Instead of extending Mariota’s stay in Philadelphia, General Manager Howie Roseman decided to cut him. If he had stayed, then the Eagles would have had an extra $2 million in cap space.

Marcus Mariota reveals his Commanders shirt number

There were fresh openings in Washington. Both of last year’s starters, Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett, are no longer part of the Capital franchise. They are eyeing one of the generational quarterbacks (possibly Jayden Daniels) in the draft. However, before they fish around for a rookie, Mariota was added as the veteran in the QB room.

Per Tom Pelissero, he signed a $6 million contract, with incentives that can take it up to $10 million. On Friday, Mariota revealed he was moving away from No. 8, which he has worn since the Oregon days, and will now wear No. 0. The last Commanders player to wear that number is cornerback Jace Whittaker in 2023.

His hair aside, Marcus Mariota wants to prove that he can still be an effective QB in the league. He is ready to do what the management and head coach, Dan Quinn, ask of him.

Whatever this staff, whatever this team needs of me, I’m going to do it to the best of my abilities. I think all those experiences create value and also create opportunities for me to build relationships with guys.
Mariota said, as per the Associated Press

There’s still a long way to go for the 2024 season. Everything depends on how well Quinn and Co. can draft. Next will be the evaluation phase for the OTAs. While there’s nothing set in stone on how the rookie QB will be, Mariota can take on the mantle of the starter.
