Spears believes that Saints offense is struggling because of the bad play calling from the coaches.

Is it time for Pete Carmichael to go? According to ESPN’s Marcus Spears, the New Orleans franchise doesn’t look as productive as everyone predicted it to be at the start of the season. The results have been less than ideal, and they sit smacked down in the middle of the pile in the NFC South with 3 wins and 4 losses.

Even Trevor Lawrence, who boasted a terrible record at the Super Dome, managed to carve out a last-gasp victory on Thursday night. The Saints were a complete no-show in the first three quarters, and at one point, it seemed that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be out of sight by the time the game ended.

They weren’t playing well, as was evident from the boos coming from the stands. QB Derek Carr‘s accuracy was just not there. It seemed like Carmichael only devised one plan for the veteran QB: to dump the ball to running back Alvin Kamara on every snap. Not the most strategic, and the Jaguars caught wind of it. They managed to restrict Kamara to only 62 yards from 17 receptions, which is 3.6 yards per carry.

Carr, on the other hand, finished the day with 33 completions for 301 yards and threw one touchdown. Not only that, Jags Foye Oluokun had a 24-yard fumble pick-six return from the former Raiders player. Throughout the night, he was unable to connect with his wide receivers. Chris Olave and Tysom Hill combined had 11 successful catches. This is probably why Marcus Spears called Carmichael out for not having a positive impact on games.

I am supposed to talk about defense, but I am going to talk about offense right now. Pete Carmichael, I am watching you, and you are not doing well. When I come for you, I am coming for you. Trust me.
Spears on ESPN’s NFL Live.

Derek Carr’s honest thoughts on Pete Carmichael

There was already tension brewing between Carmichael and Derek Carr from the previous game against the Houston Texans. The 32-year-old was caught shouting at his offensive coordinator on the sidelines. He later revealed it was merely a few words—nothing more than that. Rather, he has complete faith in his shot caller.

We have great confidence. From a player standpoint, we love Pete. We know what he brings. Once we play better and we execute better, hopefully, you know, there won’t be a target on his back.
Derek Carr before the Jaguars game.

It wasn’t the case on Thursday night. But there hasn’t been any news leaking out from the Saints front office as of yet. Still, the Jacksonville game was within a winnable radius. Now they have to give their best against the Indianapolis Colts.
