The quarterback battle in San Francisco is reportedly going one-sided as an injury is the only thing that is keeping Trey Lance in the competition with the former last overall pick Brock Purdy. Lance looked shaky in the preseason against the Las Vegas Raiders. Amidst this, the ESPN personality Marcus Spears questions the San Francisco 49ers‘ decision to draft Lance over Justin Fields during the 2021 NFL Draft.
“You lost a lot by going up and getting Trey Lance. We sat there during the draft and was like, ‘Why wouldn’t you take Justin Fields?'” said Marcus Spears in the recent episode of the ESPN show First Take. “They got a terrible situation on their hands with this. This may go down as one of the worst trades in the draft in the history of the NFL.”
The 49er traded up nine spots with the Miami Dolphins in the 2021 NFL Draft to acquire Lance as the third overall pick. The Niners gave up three first-round draft picks and a third-rounder to trade up to the No.3 position. Even then, some people questioned the 49ers’ decision to draft Lance ahead of the Ohio State quarterback Fields.
Lance had only 17 starts in his college career and didn’t even play for an FBS team. On the other hand, Fields not only played in FBS, but he also played dominated the toughest college football conference SEC. So, the Niners drafting Lance over Fields raised a lot of questions.
Lance has the potential to become a great QB in the league but injuries have kept him off the field for a long time. However, the 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has made it work so far.
“[Fortunately,] Kyle Shanahan has done such a phenomenal job of getting this team ready to play and being so creative offensively that it hasn’t shown in the win-loss column,” said Spears.

Kyle Shanahan is plotting against Trey Lance in favor of Brock Purdy, alleges insider
The 49ers suffered a humiliating loss against the Raiders in their first preseason game. The Niners’ starting QB Trey Lance looked very shaky in his first start since he left the field with an injury in 2022.
His performance was so bad it led to some conspiracy theories. The Sports Illustrated reporter Grant Cohn alleged that Kyle Shanahan purposely called bad plays to make Lance look bad in the preseason game.
Cohn believes Shanahan is making Trey Lance look bad so that he can justify starting the 2022 rookie sensation Brock Purdy in week 1 of the 2023 regular season.
