The Los Angeles Rams went 5-12 in the previous season, which is the most number of losses by a Super Bowl-defending team in NFL history. The majority of the league criticized the Rams for mortgaging their future first-round picks to acquire Matthew Stafford to win a Super Bowl.

However, the former defensive end turned analyst Marcus Spears still has praise for the 2021 LA Rams for going all out to win the Super Bowl. Even Ryan Clark commended the team for giving their fanbase the chance to sit at the top of the mountain and call themselves the 2022 World Champions because that is the ultimate goal of playing in the NFL.

Spears said on ESPN’s NFL Live, “You pay the price and the price is the Super Bowl. I played 9 years, I wish I had one. I wish a team would’ve sold out for them to get one. I wouldn’t mind them sucking right now. They saw a path previous to winning the Super Bowl that they were close and they believed that.

“So, they went out and got Matthew Stafford which they thought was the turning point. Signed Odell Beckham Jr. and they got a Super Bowl championship. I love what the Rams did. They gotta go through some pains before they get back on their feet but I’ll take the Super Bowl for that,” Spears continued.

Matthew Stafford started nine games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He went 3-6 in those games, which wasn’t a good sign and many fans believed that the former first-overall pick had regressed back to his Detroit Lions days. Even Super Bowl LVI MVP Cooper Kupp couldn’t pull the team from the ditch as he, too, played only nine games.

The cost of winning the Super Bowl finally caught up to them and now the Rams have done major restructuring in the offseason to come under the salary cap. The team mutually parted ways with veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner and traded star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins. They also made many changes in the roster to free up cap space. They currently have $10.6 million in cap space as per overthecap.com.

The Rams are in rebuild mode and will look for diamonds in the rough in the 2023 NFL draft. The NFC West division is quite weak, which works in the favor of the team. The 49ers’ quarterback situation is a cause for concern, the Seahawks won’t be able to recreate the same Geno Smith magic in 2023 and the Cardinals will take time to adjust under their new head coach.

The Los Angeles Rams have the perfect opportunity to capitalize on the disruption in the division and the conference. With Stafford back under center, the Rams have a good probability of making it to the top in 2023.
