Marshawn Lynch is one of the most dominant runnings backs that the game has ever seen. Apart from his rushing skills, the former Seahawks RB was also notorious for the way he handled the media, especially during Super Bowl 49 media day. But now, the Seahawks RB has revealed the back story behind that infamous press conference.
During his recent episode of the I AM ATHLETE podcast, Marshawn Lynch revealed he was fined heavily for avoiding the media during his playing days. The former All-Pro running back revealed a specific situation that led him to pay more than 1 million dollars as a fine to the league.
“It takes them to come in there probably like 15 to 20 minutes after the game is over, right?,” said Lynch referring to reports coming to the locker room for interviews after the game. “I’d already went in the locker maybe with two, two and a half minutes in there because we done already won the game. So, I done already showered by the time the team come in there. Do you feel me? I’m already gone. So they all wondering, ‘Where Marshawn at?’ ‘Oh, he’s not here. He gone.’ So, if I wasn’t there, then how can I make myself available? It was tough man, I had the family outside.”
Marshawn Lynch proceeded to avoid media with sarcasm

After this incident, the league added up fine from previous seasons and fined the Seahawks legend a hefty amount. “So the fines started accumulating, and it was from seasons before. And now, you feel me, they’ve run it up. So it got to a pretty penny though, you feel what I’m talking about? You got me, $1.2 million,” said Lynch in a recent episode of the I AM ATHLETE podcast.
Following the penalty, the 5-time Pro Bowler understood one thing, that is he had to address the media no matter what. During the media day before Super Bowl 49 between the Seahawks and the New England Patriots, Lynch sarcastically avoided the reporters’ questions in the infamous press conference.
Marshawn Lynch appeared before the media and simply answered, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” for every question the reporters asked. The interview took place for 4 minutes, just over the required time, while Lynch uttered the same eight words again and again 29 times before the time ran out.
It is one of the most infamous press conferences in NFL history and, as far as our knowledge, the one-time Super Bowl Champion didn’t have to pay any fine for indirectly dodging the questions.
