“Nowhere near the point of evaluating who’s where”: Matt Rhule admits Baker Mayfield-Sam Darnold situation is still UNCLEAR
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule is on the hot seat because if things don’t turn around for the Charlotte based team this season, multi billionaire owner David Tepper may make some drastic changes including firing the head coach.
Panthers top brass is desperate for a better outing this time around with that in mind they traded for Baker Mayfield, the former no.1 overall pick by the Browns. Mayfield is now in competition for the starting job against Carolina’s last offseason acquisition Sam Darnold. With his job on the line Rhule is not in a hurry to decide who will be the starting Quarterback between Mayfield and Darnold.
Baker Mayfield-Sam Darnold situation is still unclear
According to reports Rhule has said- “We’re nowhere near the point of evaluating who’s where. This was Baker’s second practice ever with us. I can’t really evaluate that yet, I would expect to see things pretty much 50-50 for the immediate future. At some point, we’ll make some decisions. But I think that’s a long way off.“
Rhule also claimed, “The first few days, let’s get them off to a good start. And we’ll make some decisions, not about the competition, but about how do we want to divide the reps up. It’s not an easy thing to divide the reps up.”
As evidenced by his words the coach is being extremely cautious and he is right to do so, because on the 1st day of the practise Mayfield had a woeful day and was completely outplayed by Darnold while on the 2nd day Mayfield was much better and was atleast competitive to Darnold.
Whatever may be the decision regarding the starter, alot of careers and lives will be depend on what will follow.
