Seems like the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL draft in 2009 isn’t planning to retire from football anytime soon. There have been many rumours surrounding the potential retirement of the 35-year-old quarterback, like when he suffered a thumb injury in Week 8 or a severe elbow injury last season. But Matthew Stafford continued playing, and nonetheless, he doesn’t foresee retirement shortly.

During a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the Los Angeles Rams quarterback talked about his potential retirement, by admitting he is “wobbling a little bit right now” with his injuries, but he still has quite some time before he bid goodbye to football.

I love playing this game. I love competing, I love being in the locker room with the guys. I'll never get that again, so I want to make sure I get as many opportunities to do that as I can.

After winning the Super Bowl LVI, the Rams struggled a lot last season as they finished at 5-12, the highest count of losses by defending Super Bowl champions. Quarterback Stafford missed eight straight games due to a concussion and spinal cord injury. This season, they had a start of 3-6 which isn’t quite an impression and Stafford again missed a week due to his thumb injury.

With a remarkable 54,152 passing yards record, Stafford has the 11th most in the history of the NFL and 12th with 341 touchdowns. He joined the Rams in 2022 in a four-year contract worth $160 million.

How did Matthew Stafford suffer the thumb injury?

In Week 8, while playing against the Dallas Cowboys, the Rams star QB sustained an ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his right thumb, resulting in him missing the whole week. During the McAfee show, Stafford also talked about his thumb injury and how it is getting better.

He assured me that his thumb is quite better now, better than what he anticipated. The quarterback expressed how worried he was that his injury might be serious and he had to miss more weeks. Fortunately, nothing that sort of happened and it was a minor injury.

For now, Stafford is doing everything in his power to recover soon. As his injury was minor, he didn’t need to have surgery. Head coach of Rams Sean McVay is quite optimistic that the quarterback will return in their game against the Seattle Seahawks.
