Mekhi Becton is the second player this week from the New York Jets to speak against the franchise. Recently, the New York-based team have come under increased scrutiny regarding their management of player, specifically around the injury-related treatments.
After the fiasco with Ty Johnson, Becton spoke against his team and the coaches. The Jets offensive linesman has blamed the coaches for his season-ending injury.
Becton has recently recovered from his fractured kneecap and is looking forward to playing with Aaron Rodgers, who has recently arrived from the Green Bay Packers. The 24-year-old had a great start to his NFL career. However, last season, things changed drastically when he was moved to the right tackle position.
Becton called out the Jets coaches for forcing him to play in that position despite him not being comfortable there. This resulted in him getting a season-long injury.
“It made no sense to put me at right tackle,” Mekhi Becton told Newsday. “I hurt my right knee. That’s going to be the knee that I put the most pressure on (while backpedaling in pass protection). I explained it (to the coaches), but no one cared.”
“I got forced to play a position I don’t play. I was pretty much telling them I wasn’t feeling good the whole time throughout camp and I was told I shouldn’t be complaining, ‘Go out there and do it,“ Beckton further said.
Mekhi Becton spoke out after Ty Johnson’s controversial admission, where he called out the Jets organization for forcing him to get surgery after his torn pec injury and cutting him without any heads-up.
Mekhi Becton is a crucial part of the Jets going forward
After the arrival of Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are looking to challenge for the title of AFC East, and for that, the veteran QB will need all the protection he can get. This is where Mekhi Becton comes in. His size and speed are extremely beneficial for the team.
However, now Becton is calling out his team in front of the media for injuring his knee by playing him in a position he wasn’t comfortable at. “I was limping throughout the whole practice, and I just took a step and my knee buckled and I got hurt again and had to get reconstructive knee surgery,” Mekhi Becton stated.
The Jets have not yet made a comment regarding Mekhi Becton’s controversial statements. However, with increasing scrutiny for the team, there will be a formal admission from them shortly.
